Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons in the wake of Lost in Thailand, films with Huang Bo participating grossed over 2 billion yuan

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, aka Odyssey, by Stephen Chow continues to hold on the box-office on its fifth day, breaking through 400 million yuan up to February 14.

Would it be another dark horse following Lost in Thailand? Anyhow it has led investors‘ expectations on the share movements of Huayi Brothers when market opens next Monday.

The other film Say Yes is said to top one hundred million yuan by today.

Have you been aware of a familiar face in the three box-office hits?

Yes, it’s Huang Bo.

Inadvertently Huang Bo becomes the most active mainland actor leading box-office at present. Previously reports claimed Yang Mi, who had 9 films screened in theater in 2012 (including Painted Skin ll which had set a new record for domestic movies) and made a total box-office of 114 million yuan, as the highest-grossed actress in Mainland China, which apparently didn’t fit the facts. According to Huxiu’s stats, Huang Bo had 4 movies released in 2012, among which just Lost in Thailand alone had earned more than 1.2 billion yuan, besides Guns and Roses had gathered more than 150 million yuan.

Counted from Crazy Stone in which Huang rose to prominence in 2006, to his latest Journey to the West, films with Huang Bo playing in have reached 2 billion yuan in revenue (list as below). Is this a record-breaking figure for a mainland actor?

His movies have been in a stable box-office performance, though, of course with stumbles in the interval, such as Design of Death and Black & White Episode 1: The Dawn of Assault in 2012, which the former one earned only more than 20 million while the latter claimed 70 million yuan at the box-office but lost more on its large cost.

Huang admits that his value has become much higher after his name exploded with Lost in Thailand. Yet he denied the alleged contract of 8 million yuan for Journey to the West, and he claimed he didn’t reach that figure.

Huang started his studio in August 2011, and it had its first investment in Lost in Thailand—-probably offset by the remuneration. After having tasted the blood, he half-jokingly expressed his regrets of not putting more money.

It’s still too far behind Hollywood for mainland actors and actress whether of box-office appeal or the commercial manners to lift self star values. As the king of Hollywood box-office, Harrison Ford has led 24 films, starring himself, to a total gross of $3.1 billion, among which 10 films have topped $200 million.

Below is the box office performance of some films with Huang Bo in:

Crazy Stone, 3 million yuan on investment and 23.5 million yuan at box-office, setting the record of ”low-investment-high-return” at the time, 2006

Fit Lover, 33 million yuan at domestic box-office, 2008

Crazy Racer, over 100 million, 2009

Guns and Roses, over 154 million at domestic box-office, 2012

Design of Death, 20 million yuan at holidays box-office in May 2012

Black & White Episode Ⅰ: The Dawn, over 300 million yuan on investment and 70million yuan, 2012

Lost in Thailand, 1.25 billion, 2012

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, 400 million yuan within 5 days, 2013

Say Yes, 100 million yuan within 5 days, 2013

What we can look forward to is The Chef, The Actor, The Scoundrel, co-starring Huang Bo and Liu Ye, which will be released in April 2013.
