December 11. According to Taiwan's Economic Daily, yesterday at the China Internet Conference AMD announced it would form an alliance with Foxconn and Hon Hai Group in light of favorable domestic conditions and relaxed regulatory policies for Internet cafes. The alliance will work hand in hand toward new policies to promote the desktop computer market.
Teaming up with AMD to attack the Internet market makers are important PC partners, Asus and Samsung. AMD has announced a series of new technologies tailored for Internet cafes, which will supply an arsenal to take hold of the market.
In November of this year, the ministries of Culture, Business Administration, Public Security, and Industry jointly issued a notice approving the full liberalisation of the Chinese Internet cafe, cancelling requirements laid out by cultural administrative departments for all levels of Internet service establishments. This was hailed by media as the advent of "Internet Cafe 2.0".
Xiaoming Pan, AMD vice president, director of inernational and general manager of Greater China, said that in the past few years the Internet market has been quite successful, though last year it faced challenges. Following product-line corrections and optimisation in preparation for market re-entry, Internet cafes are ready to show at home and abroad they are back in full force.
Currently, there are about 136,000 Internet cafes in China. With a demand for 10 million desktops, Xiaoming Pan forecasts huge market potential in the Internet next year. Mainframe upgrades could reach 500 million units and may become the key battlefield of the PC industry.
